That special F word …

I’m taking a break from the travel posts today. The A-Z challenge letter for today is F and although I could write about Fethiye or Florence or some wonderful destination, I’ve got family on my mind. There’s a very simple reason why … Last Friday, on April Fools Day, one of my cousin got married. Quite typical of my family to pick a date like that for a wedding!

It was a beautiful, sunny afternoon. My cousin, let’s call her E, and her groom, we’ll call him F, decided to get married in a relatively small country town about 90 minutes drive south of Sydney. My family aren’t religious, in fact myself and most of my cousins aren’t even Christened, but it was important to F that he & E marry in a church, so they settled on a quaint, white-washed, rural church. I come from a pretty large family, and the groom’s family was possibly even bigger, so it was a squeeze to fit us all in. But we managed.

F and his groomsmen stood as the bridesmaids (all cousin of mine as well) began their walk down the aisle. Whilst the gathering family & friends watch the bridesmaids – I turn to look at F. His eyes were welling with tears, the love he has for E was so obvious. I look back and see that the maid of honour is crying too. Glimpsing two rows back I spot my cousin K, also crying. And that was it. My valiant struggle not to tear up was gone. It wasn’t out of sadness but rather this overwhelming feeling of love for my beautiful family. I’m so lucky to have been born into such a group of emotional and open people. My tears were also happy tears too, as I’m so pleased that E has found a caring, honest, open man like F, who will treat her with respect and love. God knows they are hard to find. The struggle is real … 🙂

The reception was held at a golf country club. The families gathering to mingle and proclaim the wedding ceremony a success. It was a merging of cultures too – my family are Australians of the Anglo-Saxon, convict-ancestors variety. The groom’s family are from Samoa & New Zealand. There was something so beautiful about the mix of languages and dress styles, and everyone went wild when the grooms family took to the dance floor to do the Haka. But I’m getting ahead of myself! The new husband & wife arrive in style … Via a golf buggy over the fairway. The MC introduces the bridal party as they dance their way into the reception hall. Husband & wife take their bridal dance and in the true style of close knit families, we all … Every one of us … Got up to join them. What followed was the usual … Dinners, desserts, speeches and lots of wine. Both families were quick to acknowledge those no longer with us. I lost my grandmother in August, the groom had lost his grandfather too. So then we have tears of another kind. My grandmother would have loved to be there. She lived for her family, it was the most important thing to her. But I’m a firm believer that we never really lose loved ones, they live on in our hearts and memories.

So, here we are – one week later. My family has welcomed a new member in F and I’m sure in time when E & F have settled we’ll be welcoming some new little family members. Four of them, if E has her way 🙂 It’s days like that which remind me how important family is. That no matter what else is going on in your life, there is a group of people who, even if you only see them infrequently, love you more than anything. They may not say it but you can feel it. I sure did last Friday … The love in the room was so thick you could almost see it in the air. These are people that no matter how crazy they may be at times, they’re still my family and I wouldn’t change that for anything.

There’s a line in the movie This Is Where I Leave You … Where the sister says to her brothers “you’re idiots, but you’re MY idiots”. I love this line. Because I’m pretty sure that’s something we all would say, smile on face, about our family 🙂

  1. Kim! this is truly beautiful. Thank you for sharing this. I too come from a family not scared to express emotions. I can’t wait until my own wedding in 9 weeks! I can’t believe I’m getting married. Your post is a reminder to connect with what is happening in my life. This is such an important experience. It is epic and should take over the little gremlins in my head. THANK YOU!

    1. You’re most welcome, Daisy. I have no doubt your wedding will be a spectacularly beautiful day, filled with much love & happiness, fun & laughter. It’s such a big occasion, it’s so much bigger than those gremlins you’re battling. Like you said, that’s EPIC!! Focus on the excitement. 9 weeks! xx

  2. Kim what a beautiful post! I’m not going to lie I did miss one if your signature stunning photos but the picture you painted in my head didn’t leave me wanting for long 😉

What an amazing day from the sound if it! How wonderful for your cousin! And how lucky for you to have such a large loving family. My family is large but not close, so my dream is to create what you describe and I picture myself as your grandma, living for my family and feeling full on the love that they have for one another. How lovely for her to be there in thoughts and hearts. As much as I love your travel posts, this is a lovely treat as I love getting to know more about the person behind the tales of travel 🙂

    1. Thanks, Niki. I must say, I was tempted to throw some travel photos in too! Then I thought about some wedding photos but ultimately it’s a words-only day. There’s a lot of photo based posts coming up both during the challenge & after.
It was such a happy day. My family are close by but I don’t see them that much. But when I do … The day always ends too quickly. I think we all felt my Nana’s presence too. And I have no doubt you’ll be able to create the same situation with your family 🙂 I’m so glad you enjoyed the little view into my family! xx

      1. I’m so happy for you! What a wonderful memory to look back on. I’m sure your cousin’s additions to the family will be gorgeous once they bring more members in as you mentioned. 🙂 There’s nothing more beautiful than experiencing and blending cultures, I love it!

      2. Oh! No doubt they’ll have gorgeous children but given that E & F are both unfailingly kind & compassionate people, I’m betting their little ones will be too. And I agree, the two cultures will compliment each other so well, it added such a wonderful new dimension to the day 🙂

  3. What a wonderful day from your description! 🙂 I do not really recognize that sort of love within families, that you are talking about, I think that is not very common where I come from.. with our Vikings heritage perhaps we are a bit more cold and hard within our families… ) No, I am just kidding! About the Vikings part. But we do seem to be a bit more reserved in our display of affection here in Northern Europe, I think. Of course, I think we still have love, it’s just that we don’t really show it so much, within the families, I suppose… therefore it is really nice to read stories like this one! I am so happy that it seems to have been a great day! xo

    1. I completely agree, it’s probably not all that common and maybe it is a culture thing. My family aren’t verbal with their feelings but they are expressive in other ways. And it’s not just love and happiness, we’re a family of opinionated individuals, and most of us have a temper, so we do argue as well 🙂 It was a lovely day, thanks for reading and sharing in the story!
Where are you from, by the way?

      1. Ah, that is great. My family isn’t all that emotional at all, in any way. They never say I love you, and don’t hug very much or other things either. That sounded quite tragic, haha. But, well, I know they would be there if something bad happened and so on. So I guess there is love somewhere underneath, you know. 🙂
I am from Sweden, in Northern Europe. 🙂

      2. And that’s the important thing really – that you know they’d be there when you need them. There’s comfort in that!
Ah Sweden!! It’s on my list too. I have a number of friends who have visited Stockholm, which looks lovely! I would like to see more than just the capital though, I’m sure there’d be some spectacular landscapes in Sweden 🙂

    1. It was most definitely a highlight, Lillian! I mean, who doesn’t love the Haka?! I was so wrapped up in the moment I only managed to video the last couple of moments. And thank you for the best wishes 🙂
