I’m a little short on time today, so my A-Z Challenge post will be very photo heavy. Letter of the day is S. You’d think that coming from Sydney this would be an easy choice for me. I mean, my home city is beautiful so why wouldn’t I write about it?! And I will … just not today. Truth be told I don’t take my camera out with me when I’m home. This is a situation I should rectify and believe me, I keep reminding myself that I need to get out and take some photos of Sydney in all her glory.
I’ve decided to take you somewhere I haven’t yet mentioned in my blog … Thailand! More specifically – Sukhothai, which is located in northern Thailand and by that I mean if you take Bangkok as the centre, Sukhothai is about 400km to the north. I travelled there by local bus from Bangkok and it took about 7 hours. Sukhothai was the capital of one of Thailand’s first ancient kingdoms and was founded in 1238. It was in existence for approximately 300 years before falling by the wayside. The old capital is today a large area of some 70 square kilometres, full of stunning temples and statues of buddha. The best way to see the area is by bicycle. It’s a easy, flat ride and one of the most enjoyable ways to spend a day!

I’m often tempted to return to all the places I saw prior to digital cameras … Just to re-do the photos and get some new ones (or perhaps I’m just fishing for an excuse for more travel lol).

Great place! There are some great places in Thailand still. I saw a lot of the touristy places when I was there. Have only been one time. Too many tourists everywhere lol. But there was one island I went to which was quote nice and calm.
I loved the people in Thailand though, they were very friendly. 🙂 Great reminder about the place, seeing this. 🙂

I confess, I was a reluctant traveller to Thailand … I didn’t want to go where all the tourists go. But like you say, I was surprised to find some hidden gems away from the masses of drunken tourists (particularly in the north).

Yes… I think I mostly followed the normal tourist trails, except for one island which was a bit more relaxed and nice. For some reason I liked Malaysia more than Thailand, Malaysia was more laid back and a bit less touristy (in the places I visited at least). But, Ive only been once to those countries, so it’s only a one time impression.

Oh I haven’t been to Malaysia yet but I’ve heard that same feedback from a lot of people. I’d like to visit Langkawi and the Cameron Highlands. When were you there? Whereabouts did you go? xox

I don’t know about Langkawi, I avoided that place since I heard/read some negative things about it back then. Can’t say for sure though since I never went there. Um, this was back in…2014. Yeah I had to think, there for a minute! 🙂 I visited the Perhentian islands, although I do not like to spread that name to too many people in the world haha. I like them to remain as they were when I was there. As close to paradise as I have been, I guess. (Granted, I haven’t been to that many paradise type of places, haha).

Ah! A country you and I have in common, Kim! 😉 I went to Thailand twice in my twenties – before the age of digital cameras as well – and hope to go back with my husband one day. The positives of that anticipation: great food, cheap living and a wonderful culture. The negatives? After being in peaceful places for a decade, I am worried about the commotion and noise of SE Asia!

YAY! We found a common country! I suspect there are quite a few actually 🙂 I know what you mean about returning to S.E. Asia … I love it there, it’s cheap and close, full of culture but noisy certainly! Some areas like Phuket and Bali are too full of tourists too (at least for my taste).
