Snapshot … Victoria Falls

I’m off to Zambia for today’s post and a visit to Victoria Falls! Yes, I know … back on the African continent again. Victoria Falls is a natural border between Zambia and Zimbabwe, so travellers can visit the falls from either country. I was staying in Livingstone, in Zambia and was only a few minutes drive from Victoria Falls. The falls were named for Queen Victoria in 1855 by Scottish explorer/missionary David Livingstone. The official name however is Mosi-oa-Tunya (which means the Smoke that Thunders) and been used by local tribes for centuries.

Victoria Falls win the prize for “greatest curtain of falling water” in the world. They are 108m high (354 feet) and 1688m (5538 feet) wide. Only Iguazu Falls are bigger in height and width. Now I have to say, at the height of it’s water flow, the mist from these falls can be seen miles away and taking photos at the rim would be damn near impossible. However, despite my visit coinciding with a favourable time of year for viewing and photography the falls … Victoria Falls herself was not co-operating. As my friend & guide, J, stated … “someone has stolen the falls!!”. As you can see from the few photos attached – the smoke was not thundering 🙂

  10. Still pretty impressive, Kim! As a traveler, we have to make due with the conditions present at the time. But, you don’t seem disappointed, so that’s a good thing. I need to work on that, since I can be pretty bummed when things and sights don’t go my way, especially when they are supposed to, based on timing and preparations. 🙂

    1. It certainly is! I’ve seen photos of the falls at their best and it looks amazing. I’ve seen photos of the falls at their best and whilst I’d like to see that, you’re right – I’m not disappointed by my experience. That was the best that was on offer at the time and I’m fortunate to have been there 🙂 but I do get bummed if plans fall through on occasion lol

    1. Thanks, Cheryl. It’s a staggering depth isn’t it? Just beautiful! Nope, I don’t have a fear of heights – I quite like them lol 😀 I went bungy-jumping in New Zealand when I was a teenager and I had planned to do it again at Victoria Falls. In the end, based on reading about a couple of accidents at the site, I elected to give it a miss!

      2. Why thank you! It’s a wonderful continent. It truly does have so much to offer. My advice to people who might be curious but a little afraid; just do a tour! They aren’t all overland camping ones, if that’s not to your taste there’s small group adventure tours like those run by G Adventures or Intrepid. There’s even luxury/comfort travel options for a price. Most of these companies will even arrange a transfer to pick you up from the airport. Your doctor will be able to advise what vaccines you need; best to visit him/her a couple of months prior to departure. And as for safety; it’s just like anywhere – don’t wear jewellery or wave your cash around, go out at night in groups instead of alone, leave your bags padlocked – that sort of thing.

Looks like I found the perfect person to get advice if planning a trip to Africa 😀 Thanks a TON for the detailed reply Kim ❤ I always encourage people when they have doubts, personally I have always wanted to visit the Victoria Falls 🙂 But then places like Europe/US etc. tops over Africa and it gets sidelined. Mainly due to the scare of diseases I guess.

      3. Hahahahah, indeed, the beauty of Kenya lies in the coastal shores mostly, Mombasa an island where i live, and some mini islands where the oceanic nature and its creatures can take you away and make you feel like paradise.
