Heading back to a country which ranks as one of my favourites today … Jordan. Those of you who read the comments section of my post on the beautiful, ancient rose city of Petra would have noticed that I said Petra is my second favourite spot in Jordan. The first place goes to Wadi Rum. As mentioned previously I spent about 8 days in Jordan in 2008. Wadi Rum, also known as the Valley of the Moon, is located in the southwestern corner of Jordan. It is a spectacularly stunning combination of granite and sandstone rock formations and burnt orange sand dunes, spread over 720 square kilometres. Those of you who have seen the movie Lawrence of Arabia will also know that T.E. Lawrence spent a great deal of time in Wadi Rum. In fact, his book The Seven Pillars of Wisdom, is named after a rock formation visible at the visitor centre entrance to area.
Now some people who visit Wadi Rum only go for a day trip. I would strongly suggest you go for two days and spend the night in the desert. Honestly, I can’t stress it enough. I arrived at Wadi Rum one morning and was transferred into 4WD vehicles for my excursion into the desert. We visited many of the rock formations, saw the remains of T.E. Lawrence’s desert residence, climbed the sand dunes and the rock bridge, beofre heading to our camp for the night. As it so happens, this night, spent camping in the stunning desert landscape with a Bedouin tribe, was my birthday. I still pinch myself that I spent a birthday there – sat atop a rocky outcrop overlooking our comfortable Bedouin camp and watched the sunset over the vast landscape. Magic. That’s the only word for it. And so please, don’t cheat yourself out of that experience if you ever head to Jordan.

Thanks for sharing this post, Kim! As you know, I don’t see us visiting Jordan anytime soon and love to follow your journey virtually. 🙂

Thanks, Steve. That’s what I thought too. Some of those shots look just like what I imagine Mars might be like.

I first visited it via Lawrence of Arabia of course, which is one of my all time favorite movie.

Never been to Jordan but I’ve been to Saudi Arabia and Egypt which have similar landscapes, gorgeous pictures

Thank you! I’ve been to Egypt but not to Saudi Arabia. I have a friend who lived there for a few years … not seen any photos from his time there though.

Wow! Wonderful! Haha, I can understand you had to pinch yourself to confirm that was happening for real! No wonder you call it the best place in Jordan! 🙂
I am curious which place you will take us to, for letter X! ^_^

Haha! I didn’t have a place for X 🙂 Fortunately I’ve been doing one or two posts a week which aren’t travel “snapshots” so it allowed me to get away with it for today’s post! I have an X place on my bucket list though … I’d like to visit Xi’an in China to see the terracotta warriors!

Gorgeous scenery. We have family friends from Jordan who immigrated to Canada. I never knew lovely the place they were from was 🙂

It’s quite beautiful, Mandi. I haven’t been to Canada but I imagine it’s landscapes are equally as stunning (if not a lot less red and desert like lol).

Haha. I think that is probably why I like it. We have beautiful mountains and ski resorts close by in Banff and Jasper etc. BC is beautiful for skiing, having fruit orchards and wineries, and beautiful beaches in Vancouver and Kelowna. In Edmonton where I live, we have a great big giant mall, 4th largest in the world, and festivals all summer – Shakespeare in the park, street performers, taste of Edmonton, kdays, fringe festival and a short drive away from the Calgary Stampede. Definitely, put us on your to travel list 🙂

That’s an impressive list of sightseeing and activities! I had hoped to be in Canada this year but alas, it will need to wait. But fingers crossed that I make it soon (it’s looking like 2018 at the moment but sooner would be great!).

I would love to spend my birthday “double day” at Wadi Rum! Jordon remains a fascinating destination and your photos do it (and my desire to visit one day) justice! I really like the places and snapshots you have picked for this challenge, Kim!!

Thanks, Liesbet. I really appreciate that feedback – I kind of fell into the idea of snapshots for the challenge, it wasn’t the original plan (I was going to look at emotions). I’m sure you’ll get over to Jordan one day – us roamers always find a way 🙂 xx

Great scenery! I am not much for “desert” type of scenery in real life, but I sure love it in photos! So I would like to see it just once in real life, (Sahara is the dream!) for photos. Lol, perhaps I don’t have to now. 😉

Haha! Perhaps not 🙂 The Sahara is a worthy choice for a desert though. I’m not sure why I find them so appealing. I live on the driest continent in the world (barring Antartica, so maybe I should say driest inhabited continent) – so you’d think I’d long for green things!

well, home is always home! No wonder you like the places that sort of remind you of your country. 🙂 I do that to, to some extent. 🙂

These photos are breath taking Kim. No wonder it’s your favorite place and to be able to say you spent your birthday there … wow! Now that would definitely be one birthday to always remember. Wonderful post.
