A-Z Challenge Reflections

As you may have noticed from my previous post … I’ve had a little absence from my blog. Just a fortnight away to refresh and unwind, clear the head and concentrate on some “real life” things, relax and reflect … basically what you would call a digital detox. It is actually something that I’ll do from time to time, just to get some perspective. I figured that following the month long A-Z Challenge – I was in need of some downtime!

SO … the big question, how did I find the challenge? Well, I have to say first off that I’m amazed I actually managed to complete it. The idea of writing and posting every day was something that I found really daunting. I wasn’t sure if I had the commitment to stick to it. So that’s the first huge positive to come from the challenge! My intention has never been to write daily for my blog … I just can’t get it together enough to do that. Plus I really want my blog to have quality posts, rather than quantity … I know myself well enough to know I can’t produce quality every day šŸ˜‰

The other thing I loved about the A-Z Challenge was that it proved to be a great vehicle for discovering other blogs! The number of people that I’m following grew substantially in April and it makes blogging so much more rewarding when you find great content and interactive bloggers to mingle with. Part of the challenge rules stipulated that you were supposed to visit five other participating blogs each day … I confess that between writing, reading and commenting- I wasn’t always able to do that. I did miss quite a few days. I suspect however that this is a common problem for most of us who participated l, as I notice from my own statistics that I received approx. 42 visitors to my site (who were referred from the A-Z Challenge website). Another slight problem I came across towards the end of the month was that I was checking out other participating blogs only to discover that they had long since ceased to post anything related to the challenge.

I decided today to have a look at the statistics for my challenge posts. Just out of curiosity to see which ones received the most views, likes and comments … and which received the least. Not surprising, the posts towards the end of the month had substantially more of all of those. So in fairness to my earlier posts, I’ve decided to give them a second chance to introduce themselves to my lovely readers. Below is a list of all my subjects for the challenge, so please feel free to check out any that tickle your fancy šŸ™‚

ANGKOR THOM – Cambodia

BOULDERS BEACH – South Africa

CHOBE – Botswana

DANCE – the other universal language?

EPHESUS – Turkey

That special F word ….

GALLIPOLI – Turkey

HANOI – Vietnam

ISLAND TEMPLE OF ISIS – Egypt

It’s all about the JOURNEY …

KAKADU – Australia

LIFE LESSONS

MAI CHAU – Vietnam

NATURE at her best

OKAVANGO DELTA – Botswana

PETRA – Jordan

QANTAS

RAMSES II AND ABU SIMBEL – Egypt

SUKHOTHAI – Thailand

T is for Travel but it’s also for TRAIN WRECK

ULURU – Australia

VICTORIA FALLS – Zambia

WADI RUM – Jordan

XENOPHOBIA

YOLO

ZAMBEZI RIVER – Zambia

I guess the final question is, would I participate again? Without a doubt – YES! This was a great way to focus my writing and my content and I enjoyed the challenge of keeping up a regular routine of writing and posting. I would encourage anyone who didn’t attempt it to consider giving it a try when it next comes around. To those who did participate – I look forward to joining you all next time and seeing what wonderful posts you come up with!

    1. Hey Daisy! Thanks my friend, it’s good to be back but I do enjoy that little break from being online. I’ve just had a look over at your place … I have some serious reading to catch up on! I can’t believe your wedding is so close now … Hope the preparations are all done! I loved your A-Z posts – you used that challenge to be a voice for those that don’t have one, raising awareness of the plight of other species … Great idea šŸ™‚ xx

    1. Real life treated me very well! I feel like I’ve restored a level of balance and got things moving in a positive direction. I didn’t think I’d be able to complete the A-Z challenge either – I was very reluctant to sign up. You may surprise yourself just as I did! And thanks for the flowers šŸ˜ŠšŸ’

  3. I think I would have given up after the letter D. Haha! It was amazing to see you work on every letter, relentlessly. Took so much effort to pull out old photos (loved the ones of you as a kid) and jog your travel memory. And you’re OK with a second round? Wow! I wish I had that kind of determination. I get bored so easily. I ended a 7 day nature challenge in 3 days. šŸ™‚

    1. Haha! I figure the second round is probably a year away, so I’ll be ready for it … Hopefully šŸ˜€ I think what I really enjoyed though was that it gave me a direction, something to focus on writing about. I found that helpful. Although I admit – it took commitment that I didn’t think I had. I’m so glad you enjoyed the old photos šŸ˜€ Hope you have a lovely weekend coming up, Cheryl!

  4. Hello again! Just wanted to say that since your blog glows of awesomeness, Iā€™ve nominated you for the Sunshine blogger award! You can read all about it in my latest blog post:

    https://survivednarc.wordpress.com/2016/05/25/the-sunshine-blogger-award/

Participation (writing a similar blog post) is voluntary and there is no pressure to do so. It is just a lot of fun when people decide to participate and spread the sunshine. šŸ™‚ Anyway, congratulations, well deserved! Your friend/SurvivedNarc

  5. It’s good to have you back, Kim! And congratulations on completing the A to Z challenge! I’m sure it was hard to post quality content on a daily basis, and yet you managed to do just that. You truly are a talented writer.

  6. Wow!You have created an encyclopedia of travel journeys! Great! And welcome back! Surpassing your own expectation gives immense satisfaction! I have also never felt myself committed enough to write everyday, however when I read the experiences like the one you shared, I feel inspired! Thank you so much! šŸ™‚

      1. Haha thank you! I will give a try! One idea just came in my mind now, that I can start writing short pieces in my diary for each letter leisurely. I can use them later when challenge is announced.

    1. Hi Simon, I was back … Then I got swamped again with work lol. Just the nature of my job, sometimes there’s literally no time for anything else. Should be returning to the blogosphere sometime after 24th (I haven’t forgotten about the mission!) šŸ˜€

      1. Thats OK, it’s good to see you about. I hope you’re well! šŸ˜ƒ

People have been slow on the mission so I’m going to go round and let people know it’s all been extended to give people like you more time.

      2. I’m well, just tired. Been working 7 days a week since early May.
The extension is a good idea. Might I also suggest the option of people being able to submit their mission log as a guest post on your space blog, if they prefer? I’ve looked into it. There’s a guest writer level which only allows people to write something and save it to drafts – you retain control over when and if they are published to the site. Might make it easier for readers to follow the mission but also would be better for people like myself who don’t have a blog that includes creative writing or space/science themed posts. Just a thought bubble šŸ˜€
