A-Z Challenge Reflections (2017)

And so the 2017 A-Z Challenge has come to an end! This was my second year participating and to be honest I wasn’t even entirely sure that I was going to attempted it this year. I didn’t make that decision until the last minute. I mean, I had a list of what I would write about for each letter but I hadn’t committed in my heart until the last second. As a result, I struggled more this year. My time management for writing and scheduling posts was a bit of a mess (totally uncharacteristic of me) and I felt the pressure this time, unlike 2016. Zealous Traveller

Drum roll please!! Guess what? We’ve made it to the end of the April 2017 A-Z Blogging Challenge! Phew!! And wasn’t that a whole lot of hard work. But ultimately it’s been a great way to get back into writing and I’ve come across some wonderful new blogs and thoroughly enjoyed catching up with everything I missed from my original blogging friends. So, to Z. I didn’t want to do a specific destination for this post. I was looking back over the posts I’ve written, not just for challenges but in general, and I have to say it’s heavy on the travel. You could say it is a testament to my zeal for discovery. I figured, what better way to end the challenge then than by looking at why I travel. Continue reading “Zealous Traveller”

Ypres …

The observant among you will have noticed this post isn’t headed up “Snapshot – Ypres”. That’s because despite having been to Belgium back in 1996, I didn’t visit the city of Ypres (Or Ieper in French). So why am I writing about it? This city is important in the story of who I am. But for a bullet, fired in 1915, I may not be where I am (or perhaps even who I am) today. This post is about how the trajectory of a life and the generations that follow can turn on the smallest of events. Continue reading “Ypres …”

Xenomania

Okay, so we all know X is probably the most dreaded letter in this A-Z Challenge. Am I right or am I right? Show of hands … who automatically thinks X-Ray and tries to come up with a remotely interesting story about one? Yep. Me too. I got lucky last year (not in that sense, focusing on the writing challenge here people) – I wrote about Xenophobia. Basically it’s a dislike of people from a foreign country and it seemed a valid travel related subject matter. So I figured I’d just flip in around and look at the opposite: Xenomania. Continue reading “Xenomania”

Snapshot – Warsaw

When I was making a list of places I wanted to visit on my trip to Europe last year, Warsaw wasn’t actually on the “must see” pile. It was simply somewhere I was stopping at for a couple of days between Berlin and Krakow. I’m almost ashamed to admit to that now. As it turns out, Warsaw was one of the prettiest cities on the itinerary and I would gladly return.  Continue reading “Snapshot – Warsaw”

Snapshot – Vienna

Vienna – Austria’s capital city and also it’s largest by population, is located in the eastern part of the country. It is without doubt an historic city and the architecture speaks to this lengthy and varied history. It is a city of large scale ornate buildings, statutes and sculptures, palaces and churches. I’ve been a couple of times, I confess I don’t remember much of it from my first trip but I returned in August 2016 so the memory is fresher now. Continue reading “Snapshot – Vienna”

Unusual Foods

A non-destination specific post for today’s A-Z Challenge letter. Mostly because I used up my only “U” location for last years post when I wrote about Uluru. So instead I’m discussing the one thing all of us can relate to, whether we travel internationally or domestically or no further than our own multicultural home towns, …. unusual foods. Every country has them. Some little oddity, a dietary quirk if you will, that is a signature of our culture or geographic region. Some are more unusual than others, some are just a unique combination of globally available food products. So, here’s some of the different foods I’ve tried to date: Continue reading “Unusual Foods”

Snapshot – Ta Prohm

Well, here we are folks. It’s the final week of the A-Z challenge, and a challenge it has been this year. I’ll confess I’ve struggled with the motivation to write and I’ve often felt like I’m behind and playing catch up. I realise that’s not the case, as I’ve posted on time each day (so far!) but I was far more organised for the 2016 version. So, I’m kicking the final week off with a visit to one of my favourite sites in Cambodia – Ta Prohm. Continue reading “Snapshot – Ta Prohm”

Snapshot – Sydney

G’day readers! Well, I’ve finally got around to it. Time for a post on my home town – the beautiful harbourside city of Sydney!! I know. I can’t believe in among all the travel posts that I’ve never written about the city I was born and raised in. The place that, no matter where in the world I may live or travel, will always be called home. So … lets get into it! Continue reading “Snapshot – Sydney”

Reading

Moving away from the travel snippets for today. Life can’t always be holidays and exploration, not on my salary anyway! There have to be other joys to keep us entertained and without doubt my favourite past time for a quiet day at home is to pick up a book and lose myself in it pages. In reality, reading is something I do every day. Without fail. Sometimes for many hours on end. Voracious reader would be an apt description if ever there was one. I am a devourer of words.  Continue reading “Reading”
